Overview

What is Landfill Construction?

As the population and urbanisation increases in developing countries, waste management has emerged as a major environmental challenge. Cities and industries produce more waste, yet the available land for disposal is increasingly expensive and frequently used for residential or commercial purposes. With the advancements in technology and manufacturing, the change in the type of waste has played a major role in driving the need for sophisticated waste management.

We provide innovative and sustainable ways to generate more disposable capacity within the same land footprint available. Our systems withstand differential settlements and can utilize, locally available infill materials, minimizing the cost of building and maintaining the structure. They can be built to protect the waste and ensure toxic wastes are contained in the confined area.

Applications of Landfill Construction

Strata Geosystems offers a wide range of products that are used in landfill construction sites for site perimeter haul roads, reinforced steep slopes, retaining walls and other structures. Strata’s structural geogrids allow you to build over the weakest subsoils from dredge spoil and swamps to saturated clay with MSE berms, veneer stability and landfill caps.

MSE berms

Strata Geosystems designs and supplies Mechanically-Stabilized Earth (MSE) berms. MSE berms utilize geogrid materials and soil, as well as many facing options, to create grade separations that allow for landfill facilities to expand vertically as the need for landfills increase and land space is not available.

Veneer stability

Strata Geosystems also provides veneer stability geosynthetics for liner support in landfills. Oftentimes, soil alone is not stable enough to withstand the weight of a veneer cover, and Strata products can provide the stability necessary to ensure a solid foundation.

Landfill caps

Landfill cap systems include a geosynthetic layer that prevents too much moisture from embedding in the landfill. Strata provides this crucial layer in landfill development.

Reinforced soil structure for landfills with StrataSlope® System

Reinforced soil structure for landfills with StrataSlope® System

Reinforced soil structure for landfills with StrataSlope® System LOCATION Southeast Atlanta, GA, USA Client APA-Southeast Atlanta, GA Product used StrataGrid® – SG500 and SG550 Application Construction of reinforced soil structure. The owners of the Donzi Lane Landfill wanted an innovative way to expand the existing capacity of the landfill. Since lateral expansion was not possible, Strata recommended vertical expansion with a steepened slope. However, vertical expansion created an added complication. The existing high-tension lines were mounted on transmission supports that traversed the centre of the landfill. Height limitations were so severe that dump trucks could no longer lift their beds to discharge waste without interfering with power lines. Strata’s technical team of civil engineers designed an innovative and the most appropriate solution – StrataSlope™ System with geogrid-reinforced steep slopes with wire-basket fascia. This was the safest and highly engineered method of expanding the tightly restricted landfill. The primary reinforcement layers consisted of StrataGrid™ SG500 and SG550 with maximum embedment lengths of 26 feet. Vertical spacing of the primary reinforcement varied. The vertical spacing for the initial 6 feet of slope construction was 1.5 feet, while 3 feet vertical spacing was utilized for the remainder of the slope up to the maximum vertical height of 40 feet. The facing detail utilized StrataGrid™ SG150 for secondary reinforcement and 90-degree welded wire baskets for facing support. Strata’s value addition: Rapid and safe construction with sound systems Cost-effective by providing more storage revenue within the same land space Increased the total dumping capacity by 3 million cubic yards (~ 2.29 million cubic meters)
