Overview

Best Retaining Wall Solutions for Infrastructure?

Block, panel, and fascia retaining walls are widely used to support vertical grade changes in infrastructure and industrial projects. These structures must withstand lateral earth pressures, surcharge loads, and varying foundation conditions while remaining cost-effective and durable over the long term.

As project demands increase and construction conditions become more complex, conventional rigid retaining systems lead to higher costs, longer construction durations, and design limitations.

Strata Geosystems addresses these challenges by delivering engineered reinforcement solutions that improve wall stability, enhance structural performance, and provide a practical and economical alternative for transportation, industrial, and infrastructure developments.

Advantages of block and panel walls & fascia retaining walls

Reduced excavation and foundation requirements, helping lower construction time and costs.
Faster installation through modular construction, improving project efficiency.
High load-bearing capacity and strong structural performance.
Ability to tolerate differential settlement without cracking, ensuring long-term stability.
Design flexibility to accommodate curves, tiers, and architectural finishes.
Optimized performance under both static and seismic loading conditions.
Long-term durability with minimal maintenance requirements.

Engineering approach

Strata’s block, panel, and fascia retaining wall solutions utilize StrataGrid™ high-strength geogrids in combination with modular concrete blocks, precast concrete panels, or other engineered fascia systems to create mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) structures.

StrataGrid™ is placed horizontally within compacted granular backfill and connected to the facing units. This configuration develops a reinforced soil mass that acts as a composite gravity structure. Tensile forces mobilized within the geogrid layers resist lateral earth pressures, while the interaction between soil and reinforcement enhances internal stability.

The fascia system, whether modular blocks, precast panels, or custom architectural finishes, provides face stability, erosion protection, and aesthetic flexibility. The reinforced soil structure provides structural stability and supports surcharge loads effectively, allowing the wall to accommodate heavy surcharges from roadways, rail tracks, industrial storage areas, or building foundations.

These retaining systems are designed in accordance with established global design methodologies for MSE structures, considering internal stability, external stability, global stability, and serviceability requirements. The modular construction approach enables adaptability to varying heights, geometries, curves, tiered configurations, and staged construction sequences.

Strata sets new benchmark in RS Wall construction on highways using StrataGrid® geogrids and StrataBlock® systems

The section of National Highway (NH-8), between Dahisar (a suburb of Mumbai) and Surat was plagued with high-traffic density consisting of heavy vehicles. In order to ease the traffic, the National Highways Authority of India decided to construct 16 new structures to widen the road to six lanes.

Construction of StrataWeb® Geocell Wall 32m high RS wall in the state of Manipur

This project encompasses a total length of 111 kilometers, posing the challenge of limited Right of Way (ROW) availability on either side of the proposed road’s centerline. To address this constraint, there was a need to stabilise steep slopes, manage deep cuttings, or contain filled soil within the ROW.

Construction of retaining wall for container trailers movement at port

The Aqaba Development Authority at Jordan was looking for a technically advanced and cost-effective solution for the movement of heavy trailers towards their container yards (which lie in marine areas and hence have weaker sub-bases). The client preferred a solution that enabled the use of site-won material and previously-made blocks at the site.
