Overview
How to Stabilize Weak Subgrade Soils?
Weak and unstable subgrade soils such as soft clays, silts, and loose fills significantly affect the performance of roads, working platforms, and shallow construction areas. Low bearing capacity and high moisture content often result in excessive deformation, construction delays, and increased material requirements.
Unstable subgrades also make equipment movement difficult and compromise the integrity of overlying pavement or structural layers. Stabilizing the subgrade is essential to create a reliable base for subsequent construction activities and long-term performance

Engineering approach
During construction over weak soils, establishing a stable working base is critical. SGBGrid™ biaxial geogrid is positioned directly over the prepared subgrade before the placement of granular fill. When aggregate is placed and compacted over SGBGrid™, the grid confines the granular material at the subgrade interface, restricting lateral movement of both soil and aggregate under construction loads.
The biaxial configuration stabilizes the interface layer, reducing localized deformation and improving the immediate load-carrying response of weak soils. This creates a stabilized working base that supports construction traffic and prepares the ground for subsequent pavement or structural layers.
Design considerations include subgrade strength (CBR), moisture conditions, fill material properties, and anticipated loading during construction and service life.
