Slope erosion challenges on metro rail aren’t common, however in Nagpur Metro, as the approaches to the elevated section were built on a raised embankment, slope protection was a challenge for NMRCL. It was imperative to eliminate embankment erosion issues to avoid any risk to the railway tracks. The client was looking for a technically advanced, quick to implement, and cost-effective solution. StrataWeb® geocell were used in this project for slope protection.
The approach to the metro line before the elevated section was built on an earthen embankment. Conventionally they planned to use stone pitching for slope erosion protection. However, the slopes were not uniform, and there was a scarcity of time and stones.
Strata’s geotechnical experts recommended a design incorporating StrataWeb®. In this case, StrataWeb® SW 712–75 filled with locally available aggregate was the best solution. The usage of site-won material saved time and cost, which was an important requirement of the client.
StrataWeb® geocells are recommended as an appropriate solution by relevant codes and guidelines and are an effective way to protect the soil along a slope. The infilled geocells provide a stable layer of confined material over the slope surface.
