APPLICATION

StrataWeb® used for construction of Container Storage Yard

About the project

In any project, constructing on a weak subgrade is always a challenge. In this project, our client was confronted with a similar problem at their proposed container terminal in Kolkata, one of the four metro cities.

Container yards typically have two major issues that impact construction and maintenance: A) Heavy pressures from container stacks, B) Non-uniform settlements of the ground.

The Strata solution eliminates the concrete layer altogether. The system incorporates StrataWeb® within the paving to reduce the bearing pressures onto the subsoil. This provides a leaner pavement design. StrataWeb® along with infilling, also addresses the differential settlement issues, providing an even working ground.

The analysis demonstrated that imposed pressures with a section reinforced with StrataWeb® SW 356-150 are well within the safe bearing capacity of the subgrade. The design included two layers of StrataWeb® to bear the load spread. The StrataWeb® was infilled and topped with 10 mm of down-graded gravel. StrataBase was included to strengthen the section further and improve the performance.

Strata’s solution saved 15% of the cost compared to the conventional solution and helped in timely completion because of the ease of StrataWeb® transportation and the use of locally available and cheaper material.

StrataWeb® geocells – A slope erosion protection system for embankments

The Jordan Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) was planning to build a petroleum strategic reserves terminal in the east of Amman, Jordan. They wanted to increase the petroleum storage capacity in the area, which required an increase in the base width of the embankment. The slopes of the embankment required protection from slope erosion.

Slope protection of partial wall on flyover using StrataWeb® geocells

The ramps of the grade separators are constructed either as embankments with natural slopes or as reinforced soil walls. In the case of partial walls, where sloped embankments are supported on reinforced soil walls, the embankment slopes needed to be given adequate protection against soil erosion, which could otherwise damage the fascia of the underlying reinforced soil wall and also induce seepage into the system. The slopes of the embankments were of the order of 30° with the horizontal. The reinforced soil walls supporting the embankments were as high as 10 m. The heights of the embankments were of the order of 5 m.

Rehabilitation of road in the busy city town centre in Karnataka

Monsoons in North Karnataka are notorious for damage to roads. The site was plagued with problems like reflective cracks, potholes, undulating surfaces etc., resulting in slow traffic movement and heavy vehicular damage. This stretch had to be rehabilitated time and again over the past several years, and no solution was proving to be long-term. Since the area is a major commercial hub, it was impossible to close off this section for an extended period completely, so a quick but long-term solution was needed.
