How to Stabilize Unpaved Roads on Weak Soils?

Unpaved roads are widely used in construction access routes, mining operations, forestry roads, and rural infrastructure. These roads must support repeated vehicle movement while maintaining stability over varying ground conditions.

When constructed over weak or soft subgrades, unpaved roads are prone to rutting, surface deformation, and the mixing of aggregate with the underlying soil. This gradual loss of structural integrity can reduce road serviceability and increase maintenance requirements.

Applications of stabilization of unpaved roads

Stabilization of unpaved roads is achieved by installing StrataTex® HSR as a separation layer between the prepared subgrade and the overlying aggregate base course. The geotextile is rolled out directly over the compacted soil surface along the alignment of the road.

Once the geotextile layer is positioned, granular base material is placed over it and compacted to form the road structure. The geotextile maintains separation between the aggregate layer and the underlying soil while allowing water to pass through the system.

Under traffic loading, the aggregate layer interacts with the geotextile to maintain the structure of the road base while preventing the migration of fine soil particles into the aggregate layer. This mechanism helps preserve the integrity of the road foundation during repeated vehicle movement.
