Overview

How to Build Durable Drainage and Canal Lining Systems?

Drainage channels and irrigation canals play an essential role in water management for agricultural, hydraulic, and infrastructure projects. These systems are designed to efficiently convey water while maintaining the stability of channel beds and side slopes over long operational periods

However, conventional canal construction methods face challenges such as erosion of channel surfaces, loss of soil particles due to flowing water, and structural deterioration of unprotected slopes. These issues reduce hydraulic efficiency and lead to increased maintenance requirements over time.

Strata supports the development of durable drainage and canal lining systems by integrating engineered geosynthetic solutions that stabilize channel surfaces and protect the underlying soil from hydraulic forces.

Advantages of drainage and canal lining

Effective protection against surface erosion and soil loss
Improved stability of canal beds and side slopes
Adaptability to varying channel geometries and gradients
Reduced maintenance requirements over the service life
Ability to use different infill materials based on project needs
Long-term durability under hydraulic loading conditions

Engineering approach

The drainage and canal lining system utilizes StrataWeb® geocells, which form a three-dimensional cellular confinement structure when expanded on site. The panels are placed along the canal bed and side slopes over a prepared subgrade surface and secured to maintain their position during installation.

Once the cellular structure is expanded, the individual cells are filled with suitable infill materials such as soil, aggregate, or concrete depending on the hydraulic and structural requirements of the project. The infill is then compacted or finished to form the final channel lining surface

The interconnected cells confine the infill material within the three-dimensional matrix, restricting its lateral movement under hydraulic loading and surface flow. This confinement creates a stable lining layer that interacts with the underlying soil, forming a reinforced system capable of maintaining the geometry of the canal bed and slopes while managing the effects of flowing water.

The system can be configured for different channel geometries, slope conditions, and hydraulic demands, making it suitable for irrigation canals, stormwater drains, and other water conveyance structures.
