Reservoir slope and liner protection

About the project

A Thermal Power Plant was being constructed near Gandhidham, Gujarat, by the client. A raw water reservoir has been constructed with a storage capacity of 50,000 m3 to stockpile and ensure a constant water supply. It is lined with a 250-micron geomembrane to render the bottom and side slopes impervious. The geomembrane lined slopes required protection from external damage and uplift pressures. Conventionally, a plain cement concrete lining is placed above the geomembranes. However, due to the weight of concrete tiles or green concrete, the liner tends to slide down and collect at the toe, rendering the system inadequate.

Since the side slopes were steep, Strata’s experts suggested using StrataWeb® geocells with lean concrete infill. Also, the reservoir was required to be completed in time to fill up rainwater during the fast approaching monsoons, thus requiring urgency in execution.

Green concrete typically cannot be placed directly on sloping geomembrane. Geocells offer a technical solution by providing cellular pockets to hold the green concrete in place. Since the concrete is not cast continuously because of geocells, ungainly cracks in concrete are avoided.

Besides these technical advantages, geocells make it easy for fast installation to meet strict deadlines. The StrataWeb® solution is a fast and all-weather installation solution. No skilled labour is required. These factors resulted in substantial savings in money and resources.

StrataWeb® geocells – A slope erosion protection system for embankments

The Jordan Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) was planning to build a petroleum strategic reserves terminal in the east of Amman, Jordan. They wanted to increase the petroleum storage capacity in the area, which required an increase in the base width of the embankment. The slopes of the embankment required protection from slope erosion.

Slope protection of partial wall on flyover using StrataWeb® geocells

The ramps of the grade separators are constructed either as embankments with natural slopes or as reinforced soil walls. In the case of partial walls, where sloped embankments are supported on reinforced soil walls, the embankment slopes needed to be given adequate protection against soil erosion, which could otherwise damage the fascia of the underlying reinforced soil wall and also induce seepage into the system. The slopes of the embankments were of the order of 30° with the horizontal. The reinforced soil walls supporting the embankments were as high as 10 m. The heights of the embankments were of the order of 5 m.

Rehabilitation of road in the busy city town centre in Karnataka

Monsoons in North Karnataka are notorious for damage to roads. The site was plagued with problems like reflective cracks, potholes, undulating surfaces etc., resulting in slow traffic movement and heavy vehicular damage. This stretch had to be rehabilitated time and again over the past several years, and no solution was proving to be long-term. Since the area is a major commercial hub, it was impossible to close off this section for an extended period completely, so a quick but long-term solution was needed.
