Overview

What are Working Platform Stabilization?

Soft or variable ground increases the risk of platform failure. Saturated clays and loose fill cause differential settlement. Under tracked plants and repeated loads, deformation builds fast.

Conventional solutions rely on thick granular layers. This adds cost, time, and haulage with no guarantee of uniform performance.

Advantages of geosynthetic reinforced platforms

Deep excavation and imported fill are commonly used to form working platforms during early construction. These measures address immediate access needs but do not account for variability in ground response. Geosynthetic reinforcement allows platform behaviour to be managed through controlled load transfer and deformation.

Improved stability over weak subgrades

On soft ground, load transfer within the platform limits stress concentration at the subgrade interface. The working surface remains serviceable with reduced loss of level under traffic.

Improved safety margins

Settlement and surface movement are more controlled. Equipment response becomes predictable, reducing the likelihood of instability during operation.

Reduced differential settlement

Where subgrade stiffness varies, tensile elements within the platform moderate differential movement. Support conditions remain more uniform, limiting the need for frequent adjustment or re-leveling.

Reduced reliance on imported fill

Improved interaction between the working layer and subgrade allows available fill to perform more effectively. Required layer thickness reduces, along with dependence on imported aggregates and haulage.

Earlier site mobilisation

Platforms reach a trafficable condition with less excavation and fill placement. Construction plant access is achieved sooner, without waiting for full ground improvement.

Where geosynthetics support platform design

Strata’s geosynthetics are used to stabilize working platforms where ground conditions are weak and equipment loading is high.

Heavy tracked equipment pads

Heavy tracked equipment pads

Crawler cranes, excavators, and haul trucks produce high contact pressures. Without reinforcement, these loads result in punching failure or surface degradation. StrataGrid™ and StrataWeb® reduce bearing stress and keep working surfaces intact under repeated cycles
Drilling and piling rigs

Drilling and piling rigs

Rotary and impact rigs generate high axial and torsional loads. Vibrations amplify deformation in soft soils. Reinforced platforms distribute these forces, confine movement, and control settlement. This keeps equipment level during operation and reduces the risk of tilt or bore misalignment.
Stockpile zones

Stockpile zones

Extended static loads from stockpiles compress the subgrade and lead to long-term settlement. On variable soils, this creates undulations and drainage problems. Reinforced platforms control vertical strain and limit differential settlement, reducing the need for regrading or fill replacement during operations.
Crusher and plant foundations

Crusher and plant foundations

Processing equipment transfers dynamic loads into the ground through fixed bases. On soft or variable subgrades, this results in uneven settlement across footing zones. Misalignment and vibration increase as support conditions shift, accelerating wear and disrupting operations. Reinforced platforms control vertical strain, reduce differential movement, and maintain consistent bearing support under cyclic loading.
Temporary bases during early works

Temporary bases during early works

Early mobilization often takes place on subgrades that have not been treated or improved. Under construction traffic, soft ground deforms quickly, leading to loss of level and local bearing failure. A reinforced working layer is introduced to spread loads, confine fill, and prevent subgrade intrusion. This allows the construction plant to operate without excessive rutting of the working layer while permanent ground improvement continues.
High-load zones over variable fill

High-load zones over variable fill

Platforms built over old fill, spoils, or backfilled pits face unpredictable settlement. Reinforcement controls variability, spreads load, and avoids excavation of poor soils.
