What are haul road?

With shifting mine plans and pressure to mobilize quickly, haul roads are often treated as temporary solutions; built quickly, with limited data on subgrade strength or long-term load demands. Early investment in reinforcement often seems counterintuitive.

Yet in practice, these roads face some of the harshest loading conditions in civil engineering: extreme axle loads, continuous braking, and high-frequency traffic over weak or saturated soils. Without adequate ground improvement, deterioration sets in early, resulting in rutting, profile loss, and downtime that disrupts both equipment life and production schedules.

Stabilizing weak subgrades

Stabilizing weak subgrades

While reinforcement is key to haul road performance, separation should not be ignored, especially over soft, moisture-sensitive soils. Without a barrier, repeated loading can pump fines into the base, weakening its structure and reducing bearing capacity over time.
• StrataGrid™: High-tenacity PET geogrids for reinforcing soft to medium strength soils. Their low creep properties and excellent long-term performance make them suitable for continuous loading in haul roads.
• StrataTex HSR™: A high-strength polyester geotextile tthat stabilizes the interface between soil and aggregate. With tensile strengths up to 800 kN/m, when placed beneath granular layers, it maintains layer integrity, limits shear deformation, and supports the performance of primary reinforcement.
A stabilized subgrade supports heavier loads and needs less aggregate, which speeds up construction.

Base reinforcement using StrataWeb geocells

Reinforcement of base layers is critical to control the lateral movement of aggregates. This is where StrataWeb® delivers superior value over traditional methods by using weak local infill material. With easy-to-roll and deploy collapsible HDPE materials, our geocells are used onsite to improve stiffness.
• StrataWeb™: Locks the infill in place, preventing shear failure and rutting under dynamic loads. It is especially effective over soft clays, mine spoils, and variable fill materials.
By confining the base layer, the structural stiffness improves, reducing the rate of deterioration and the need for frequent grading.

Temporary construction roads and internal mine access tracks often suffer from insufficient design due to their short-term life. Yet these roads carry heavy equipment early in the project lifecycle, where delays create a domino effect of issues. Our recommended approach includes:
