How to handle leachate in landfills

Most leachate system failures are not immediate. They develop over time due to clogging of drainage media, differential settlement of the waste mass, increasing waste loads, and changes in leachate chemistry as decomposition progresses. These long-term mechanisms can compromise drainage efficiency, alter flow paths, and increase hydraulic head on the liner.

Modern landfills amplify these challenges. Deeper cells, higher moisture waste streams, vertical expansion, and phased development place sustained hydraulic and structural demands on leachate systems. Leachate management is therefore not just a hydraulic function at commissioning but a long-term performance and compliance challenge that must be addressed over the full design life of the facility.

Why leachate management needs to be robust

When leachate and gas can’t move through the landfill the way the system was designed to allow, problems start to compound. Leachate begins to pond instead of draining. Gas pressure builds beneath low-permeability layers. Flow is forced along unintended paths. Over time, liners and interfaces are subjected to stresses they were never meant to carry continuously, increasing the likelihood of leakage and making detection less reliable.

Strata’s combined products address risk by keeping both liquid and gas pathways open and functional as conditions change. StrataDrain™ keeps drainage flowing so leachate can reach collection points instead of accumulating on the liner. Strata geogrids and geocells stabilize the surrounding ground, limiting deformation that disrupts drainage layers, distorts gas pathways, or isolates detection systems as settlement progresses.

Where loading increases or subgrades are weak, Strata geogrids or geocells are used below the drainage layer to stabilize the foundation.
