Strengthening of flexible pavement in hilly terrain

About the project

The client proposed building an access road to the villas in the hilly terrains of the Nilgiris in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. The challenges included difficulty for the movement of heavy construction machinery on the hilly terrain due to deep ruts. Also, heavy traffic movement was affected due to improper and insufficient drainage, especially during the monsoons. Therefore, there was a need to have a definitive solution for subgrade improvement.

Strata’s team of geotechnical experts proposed the design using StrataWeb® for the strengthening of the flexible pavement. Introducing StrataWeb® SW 356-150 geocells in a granular base or subbase improves pavement longevity and economizes the overall crust thickness.
 

StrataWeb® was selected as an innovative solution that saved approx. 15% of the cost, helped faster execution of work with an excellent inbuilt drainage feature for strengthening flexible pavement in the hilly terrain.

The ramps of the grade separators are constructed either as embankments with natural slopes or as reinforced soil walls. In the case of partial walls, where sloped embankments are supported on reinforced soil walls, the embankment slopes needed to be given adequate protection against soil erosion, which could otherwise damage the fascia of the underlying reinforced soil wall and also induce seepage into the system. The slopes of the embankments were of the order of 30° with the horizontal. The reinforced soil walls supporting the embankments were as high as 10 m. The heights of the embankments were of the order of 5 m.
