Embankment reinforcement over soft subgrade

About the project

The client stipulated the need for a fast-track geotechnical solution to assist in constructing an embankment for a new highway between Hemus University and the town of Hemus, Jablanica. The primary challenges of this project were completing it within a short timeline and ensuring minimal environmental impact during construction.

StrataGrid™ was utilized as the solution for soil reinforcement of the retaining structures with low excavation volume. This not only provided economic benefits but also helped complete the work within the limited time period.

The reinforced soil system was designed to last up to 120 years. It was constructed using a fortified soil structure with a fascia consisting of double twisted hexagonal wire mesh and anti-corrosion coating.

The strengthening facility consists of two parts. The foundations are filled with gabion modules with a vertical stone face up to 1 m high. The second zone is 26.0 m high and consists of factory modular fascia systems with a 70° slope angle face. It is then layered with 30 cm of fertile soil that supports vegetation.

Reinforced soil structures using StrataGrid™ are widely used globally due to their strength, durability, and longevity. These structures are designed to conform to international standards and are cost-effective. Consequently, StrataGrid™ was selected as an innovative solution for this embankment construction.
