APPLICATION

Segmental Retaining Wall (SRW), Sleeve-It™ Fence Integration System

About the project

Security is a top priority in the shipping industry. So when plans for DHL’s new 2,90,000 square foot distribution facility in Allentown, Pennsylvania, called for 3,450 linear feet of retaining wall along the perimeter of the 72-acre site, the chain link fencing above the walls quickly became a topic of concern for the wall contractor and construction manager.

The conventional system was to offset the fence post 36” from the dry stack wall face and install a fence post foundation.

We suggested they use our advanced pre-engineered product called Sleeve-It™. In all, over 350 Sleeve-It™ units were installed during the wall construction. Sleeve-It™ is typically pre-assembled at the material staging area for the wall, then set in place with desired post spacing when the wall has reached approximately 24” from the top of the wall. When the wall construction was completed, the fence installer arrived to complete the perimeter fencing.

The result was a well-secured facility completed on time, within budget and able to deliver the peace of mind that goes with it.

The Jordan Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) was planning to build a petroleum strategic reserves terminal in the east of Amman, Jordan. They wanted to increase the petroleum storage capacity in the area, which required an increase in the base width of the embankment. The slopes of the embankment required protection from slope erosion.

Slope protection of partial wall on flyover using StrataWeb® geocells

The ramps of the grade separators are constructed either as embankments with natural slopes or as reinforced soil walls. In the case of partial walls, where sloped embankments are supported on reinforced soil walls, the embankment slopes needed to be given adequate protection against soil erosion, which could otherwise damage the fascia of the underlying reinforced soil wall and also induce seepage into the system. The slopes of the embankments were of the order of 30° with the horizontal. The reinforced soil walls supporting the embankments were as high as 10 m. The heights of the embankments were of the order of 5 m.

Rehabilitation of road in the busy city town centre in Karnataka

Monsoons in North Karnataka are notorious for damage to roads. The site was plagued with problems like reflective cracks, potholes, undulating surfaces etc., resulting in slow traffic movement and heavy vehicular damage. This stretch had to be rehabilitated time and again over the past several years, and no solution was proving to be long-term. Since the area is a major commercial hub, it was impossible to close off this section for an extended period completely, so a quick but long-term solution was needed.
