About the project

In this project, the Railways Authority in India was seeking a technically advanced and fast solution for slope erosion protection of a railway embankment. The erosion protection measures were mandatory to ensure the protection of the rail tracks.
 

The client had used stone pitching as a solution earlier but was not satisfied with it. They were looking for a solution that worked and was: 1. Quick and cost-e­ffective 2. Long-lasting with minimal maintenance 3. Aesthetically pleasing 4. Capable of being constructed without stones due to its scarcity.

In contrast to the constraints of the conventional system, the StrataWeb® slope erosion system overcomes these challenges. StrataWeb® was recommended as an appropriate solution by relevant codes and guidelines and is an eff­ective way to protect the soil along the rail embankment. It is reported that the site has shown no signs of degradation and has remained robust through the heavy rains of 2019. CRS inspection (CRS is the government commission of railway safety of India) is over, and it is successful.
 

The value addition included 5 times faster installation due to ease of StrataWeb® transportation and use of locally available and cheaper material. The solution also saved up to 10% of the cost vs stone pitching.

The ramps of the grade separators are constructed either as embankments with natural slopes or as reinforced soil walls. In the case of partial walls, where sloped embankments are supported on reinforced soil walls, the embankment slopes needed to be given adequate protection against soil erosion, which could otherwise damage the fascia of the underlying reinforced soil wall and also induce seepage into the system. The slopes of the embankments were of the order of 30° with the horizontal. The reinforced soil walls supporting the embankments were as high as 10 m. The heights of the embankments were of the order of 5 m.
