Snow avalanche protection

About the project

Avalanches most often occur in mountainous regions, with steep slopes and large snowfalls, such as Northern Norway Municipality. The most critical slope angles for triggering snow slides are between 35–45 degrees in terms of the size and energy of the snow impact.

The primary concern for the Fjordgard community was that there were many years of historic avalanches, already recorded, along the main mountain slope which towered over the town. This new StrataGrid™ Avalanche Barrier was designed in accordance with the International Design Standard for Barriers based on a 120-year life.

Strata supplied approximately 52,000 sqm of StrataGrid™ of styles SGU 120, 250 and 350 for the project. Using the Strata MSE Wall system required no use of imported soil. This resulted in faster construction, which was more economical and had a lower environmental impact.

High tenacity StrataGrid™ reinforced soil system was used as a cost-effective solution for a 500 m long and 14-meter-high gabion wall to protect homes from heavy snow avalanches.

Avalanche Bund Wall was built to prevent damage to town infrastructure from snowfall.

The ramps of the grade separators are constructed either as embankments with natural slopes or as reinforced soil walls. In the case of partial walls, where sloped embankments are supported on reinforced soil walls, the embankment slopes needed to be given adequate protection against soil erosion, which could otherwise damage the fascia of the underlying reinforced soil wall and also induce seepage into the system. The slopes of the embankments were of the order of 30° with the horizontal. The reinforced soil walls supporting the embankments were as high as 10 m. The heights of the embankments were of the order of 5 m.
