Reinforced soil wall using StrataGrid and StrataWeb® geocells as fascia

About the project

This project encompasses a total length of 111 kilometers, posing the challenge of limited Right of Way (ROW) availability on either side of the proposed road’s centerline. To address this constraint, there was a need to stabilise steep slopes, manage deep cuttings, or contain filled soil within the ROW.

A total of 34 locations were identified as critical areas with deep filling requirements ranging from 6 metres to 47 metres. In these specific locations, constructing conventional retaining structures such as RCC (Reinforced Concrete), PCC (Plain Cement Concrete), or RRM (Reinforced Retaining Wall) within the available Right of Way is challenging and, in some cases, nearly impossible.

Therefore, the solution was to construct a reinforced soil wall using StrataWeb® geocells and StrataGrid™, Eight locations have been completed using this technology in record time, without compromising quality and safety requirements. While average structure heights were 6 metres to 47 metres but the tallest wall was 32m.

The multi-layered geocells prove to be an ideal solution for MSE (Mechanically Stabilised Earth) Retaining Walls, meeting all structural design requirements. The StrataWeb® geocell wall not only offers desirable aesthetics but also provides environmental benefits through a naturally vegetated, near-vertical fascia with the same structural stability found in conventional retaining wall systems.

StrataWeb geocells allow construction flexibility, meeting site challenges when subgrade soils are compressible and in such a location where the access is difficult to start construction. The multi-layered Geocell Cellular Confinement system is used for a wide range of earth retention requirements.

The ramps of the grade separators are constructed either as embankments with natural slopes or as reinforced soil walls. In the case of partial walls, where sloped embankments are supported on reinforced soil walls, the embankment slopes needed to be given adequate protection against soil erosion, which could otherwise damage the fascia of the underlying reinforced soil wall and also induce seepage into the system. The slopes of the embankments were of the order of 30° with the horizontal. The reinforced soil walls supporting the embankments were as high as 10 m. The heights of the embankments were of the order of 5 m.
