Overview

How to protect the environment around landfills

Landfill capping is a protective layer, engineered and installed, over a landfill once filling operations are complete or capacity is reached. Landfill caps are not static structures. A properly designed landfill cap does more than seal the site. It manages infiltration, controls gas migration, resists erosion, and accommodates long-term settlement of the waste mass. When reinforced with geosynthetics, the cap becomes a structural system capable of performing reliably over decades.

Differential settlement distorts the waste surface, gas pressure builds beneath low-permeability layers, rainfall drives infiltration and surface runoff, and slope geometry introduces downslope forces. Together, these mechanisms place ongoing demands on the cap system that extend well beyond permeability alone.

Cap performance, therefore, depends on how individual layers interact over time. Soil, drainage layers, geomembranes, and gas systems must continue to function as a composite system while accommodating movement and stress redistribution.

On landfill side slopes, this interaction becomes even more critical. Stability and long-term serviceability are just as important as hydraulic performance and often govern the design of the cap system.

Choosing the right landfill capping mechanism

Final landfill closure systems

Engineered caps that can handle long-term settlement, environmental loading, and regulatory service life requirements.

Intermediate caps during phased landfill development

Temporary or semi-permanent caps that must remain stable while the underlying waste continues to settle and future lifts are planned.

Caps over waste undergoing differential settlement

Cover systems that must tolerate non-uniform deformation without cracking, sliding, or loss of integrity.

Side-slope cover systems where stability governs design

Applications where veneer stability and interface shear resistance control performance more than vertical permeability.

Post-closure covers for long-term monitoring and maintenance

Caps are designed to reduce future maintenance while supporting gas management, inspection access, and surface durability.

Advantages of landfill capping

• Maintains cap integrity under long-term settlement: Reinforced cover systems accommodate movement without cracking, separation, or loss of performance.

• Improves the stability of cover systems on slopes: Veneer reinforcement reduces the risk of sliding, erosion, and progressive failure on side slopes.

• Supports consistent infiltration control over the design life: Stable layer interaction helps preserve low-permeability performance despite deformation and environmental loading.

• Enables efficient cap profiles without excessive material use: Reinforcement allows optimized soil thickness and slope geometry while maintaining required safety factors.

• Reduces the likelihood of post-closure repairs and interventions: Improved stability and durability lower long-term maintenance demands and lifecycle costs.
