Overview
How to Improve Weak Subgrade for Roads and Infrastructure?
Subgrade conditions play a crucial role in the performance of transportation and infrastructure systems. Roads, working platforms, rail corridors, and industrial yards often rely on stable subgrades to support structural layers and ensure long-term performance under applied loads.
However, weak or variable subgrade soils can create challenges during construction and throughout the service life of the structure. Excessive deformation, loss of structural integrity, and mixing between soil and aggregate layers can affect the stability of the foundation system and lead to increased maintenance requirements.
With extensive experience in geosynthetic ground engineering, Strata provides solutions that help improve subgrade performance in demanding site conditions.

Applications of subgrade improvement
Subgrade improvement is implemented by installing StrataTex® HSR directly over the prepared subgrade surface prior to the placement of the overlying structural layers. The geotextile is rolled out across the treatment area to form a continuous separation layer between the underlying soil and the aggregate base or fill material placed above it.
After installation, granular materials are placed over the geotextile and compacted to form the base layer of the structure. The geotextile maintains separation between the aggregate and the subgrade while allowing water to move through the system.
During loading, the geotextile interacts with the surrounding materials to retain soil particles within the subgrade and prevent contamination of the aggregate layer. This interaction helps maintain the structural configuration of the base layer while supporting the performance of the overall system.

Strengthening of steel cargo yard using StrataWeb® geocells
This project involved strengthening a steel coil stacking yard using StrataWeb® geocells at Dhamra Port, Odisha. A cargo yard for steel coil in 2 stacks was proposed at Dhamra Port. The yard had to be constructed over highly plastic weak clayey soil with low shear strength. Since the cargo yard needed to withstand the load of heavy containers, the foundation needed to be very stable and robust. The client was looking for a technically advanced, sturdy, and long-lasting solution without hindering daily operations at the yard.

StrataWeb® geocells carries port traffic over clay sub grade in Navi Mumbai
Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) at Nhava Sheva, Navi Mumbai, is spread over 10 square kilometres and is the largest container port in India. State Highway SH-84 connects the JNP-Panvel Road junction to the ONGC terminal at Uran and experiences very heavy traffic movement. Due to heavy loads, the road stretch has always had issues of cracking and subsidence, requiring recurring and persistent annual rehabilitation.
