This project involved strengthening a steel coil stacking yard using StrataWeb® geocells at Dhamra Port, Odisha. A cargo yard for steel coil in 2 stacks was proposed at Dhamra Port. The yard had to be constructed over highly plastic weak clayey soil with low shear strength. Since the cargo yard needed to withstand the load of heavy containers, the foundation needed to be very stable and robust. The client was looking for a technically advanced, sturdy, and long-lasting solution without hindering daily operations at the yard.

The conventional solution would be to replace a massive quantity of soil, or sand drains, which would have required a surcharge for 6 months as ground improvement. This would be expensive, time-consuming, and not environmentally friendly.

Strata provided the design for the road with StrataWeb® geocells, StrataGrid™ Biaxial and a non-woven geotextile, using GSB as infill. The design suggested the complete elimination of the expensive concrete section that led to substantial cost savings.
 

The system incorporates StrataWeb® geocells to reduce the bearing pressures onto the subsoil. The unique three-dimensional structure of geocells confines the fill material and enables the lateral spread of the load. The textured surface of the cell walls and the perforations help to hold the soil within the cells.
