The Kedarnath Valley has always been affected by soil erosion due to weather conditions. Unprecedented flash floods in June 2013 exacerbated this erosion. Landslides and mudslides caused by a devastating cloudburst ravaged the area. The shrine was closed to pilgrims for a year. The debris needed to be cleared and re-establish the area’s ground stability before allowing pilgrims through again.
Keeping in mind the need for timely completion and the need for providing a quality solution notwithstanding the low CBR and poor quality soil, StrataWeb® geocells were recommended. StrataWeb® geocell panels were transported to the nearest base and were airlifted to Kedarnath.
StrataWeb® SW 356-150 geocells were used for constructing the access road and pavement from the helipad to the temple. The geocells were infilled with local infill material (GSB). This was a more practical and long-term solution.
