This project involved ground improvement of the subgrade for internal roads at yarn mills in Thane, Maharashtra. The site had expansive soil, making conventional road repair methods ineffective. Black cotton soil retains water and expands, leading to road damage. The client required a long-term soil stabilization solution to strengthen the pavement. Since the factory was operational, shutting down internal roads was not feasible, necessitating an innovative approach.
The challenges included poor subgrade conditions, fatigue and rutting due to heavy rainfall, and the need to support heavy vehicle traffic.
Strata proposed a geosynthetic solution using StrataWeb® geocells for load-bearing applications. The cells were filled with non-plastic material, and their confinement provided rigidity to the system. This improved the overall stress-strain behavior, enabling a more efficient and cost-effective design. Strata’s geotechnical team also recommended removing a portion of the existing road crust and replacing it with a layer of StrataWeb® geocell.
The introduction of StrataWeb® in the subgrade improved pavement longevity while optimizing the overall crust thickness. Its ease of installation also enabled faster project execution.
