StrataGrid™ SGU 60 now EPD certified for sustainable construction

In line with our commitment to sustainability in infrastructure, Strata Geosystems is proud to announce the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for StrataGrid™ SGU 60. This achievement reflects our long-standing focus on product transparency, responsible manufacturing, and sustainable design.

What is an environmental product declaration (EPD)?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized, third-party-verified document that reports the environmental impacts of a product across its life cycle, from raw material extraction through manufacturing, and beyond depending on the defined scope.

For construction materials, EPDs are typically developed in line with international standards such as ISO 14025 (for Type III environmental declarations) and EN 15804+A2 (which gives core rules for construction-product EPDs).

The core purpose of an EPD is to present transparent, comparable data about resource use (energy, water), emissions (e.g. greenhouse gases), and other environmental impacts over defined life-cycle stages.

Why EPD matters

  • EPDs let architects, consultants, contractors and other stakeholders evaluate materials based on environmental performance; not marketing or unverified claims.
  • When comparing two products, only EPDs with identical scope, life-cycle boundaries, and declared units yield meaningful comparisons.

Hence, an EPD is not a sustainability “seal.” It is an objective, data-driven disclosure that enables informed decision-making.

About StrataGrid™ SGU 60: the product with the EPD

The product covered by the EPD is StrataGrid™ SGU 60, a high-performance uniaxial polyester geogrid designed for soil reinforcement applications.

  • Composition: StrataGrid™ SGU 60 is manufactured by knitting high-tenacity polyester yarns into a dimensionally stable grid structure and applying a polymer-modified protective coating to provide long-term durability.
  • Key features: Our geogrid offers high tensile strength with controlled elongation, excellent mechanical and chemical durability, and resistance to environmental degradation through its UV-stabilized coating. StrataGrid™ SGU 60 is engineered for long-term performance in aggressive soil environments and is designed for a reference service life of 100 years.
  • Primary applications: StrataGrid™ SGU 60 is widely used in reinforced soil retaining walls, steep reinforced slopes, embankments for roads and railways, pavement and ground reinforcement systems, and other geotechnical structures where long-term stability and load transfer are critical.

These attributes make SGU 60 not just technically strong, but environmentally transparent with EPD.

Scope of the EPD

The EPD for StrataGrid™ SGU 60 covers life-cycle modules A1–A3 (raw-material extraction, transport, and manufacturing), along with end-of-life modules C1–C4 and Module D, in accordance with EN 15804+A2.

  • Data collection period: 01/01/2023 – 31/12/2023.
  • The EPD is product-specific, with no averaging across product families, ensuring that the reported data reflects the environmental performance of this exact product.
  • The product complies with regulatory requirements, with no Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) present above 0.1% by mass, in line with REACH.

This clear and structured EPD provides designers, procurers, and clients with confidence in the environmental footprint of StrataGrid™ SGU 60.

Key environmental metrics

Based on the EPD, the environmental impact per declared unit of 1 m² (mass 0.22 kg) of StrataGrid™ SGU 60 includes:

  • Global Warming Potential (fossil), A1–A3: 1.06 kg CO₂-equivalent
  • Total energy use (A1–A3): 4.66 kWh
  • Net freshwater use (A1–A3): 0.01 m³
  • Secondary material input: 1.66%
  • Secondary material output: 0%
  • Biogenic carbon content:
    • Product: 0 kg C
    • Packaging: 0.002624 kg C

These indicators reflect the environmental impacts associated with raw-material sourcing, transport, and manufacturing, providing a reliable basis for project-level life-cycle assessments.

What this EPD means for sustainable infrastructure

By publishing an EPD for StrataGrid™ SGU 60, Strata Geosystems demonstrates accountability and transparency through quantified, standards-based environmental data.

Key implications include:

  • The environmental impacts of StrataGrid™ SGU 60 are clearly defined and disclosed, enabling inclusion in project-level environmental calculations.
  • Product-specific data strengthens confidence in green procurement, particularly for infrastructure projects with sustainability targets.
  • StrataGrid™ SGU 60 aligns with the objectives of green building and infrastructure frameworks, where lifecycle data is increasingly expected.
  • Over the long term, informed material selection supports reduced environmental footprints, resource efficiency, and responsible infrastructure development.
